Welcome to Universal Studios Hollywood

Universal Studios Hollywood is a theme park and film studio located in the San Fernando Valley area of Los Angeles County, California. Around 70% of the studio is located on the unincorporated county island referred to by the name of Universal City while the rest is within the city limits that are located in Los Angeles, California. It is among the oldest and most renowned Hollywood film studios that is still operating. Its official slogan for marketing has been “The Entertainment Capital of LA”. The park was initially designed to provide tours of the authentic Universal Studios sets and is the first of many fully-fledged Universal Studios Theme Parks located all over the world.

Outside the theme park an all-digital, new facility is located near the Universal Pictures backlot was built in an attempt to integrate all of the NBCUniversal’s West Coast operations into one region. This has resulted in the new home for KNBC, KVEA and NBC News with Noticias Telemundo Los Angles Bureaus with a new digital facility is located on the Universal lot previously owned by Technicolor SA. Universal City includes hotels Universal Hilton & Towers and which includes the Sheraton Universal Hotel as well as Universal CityWalk, which offers an array of shops and restaurants, as well as the 18.3-screen Universal Cinema and a seven-story IMAX theatre. In 2017 the park was home to 9.056 million visitors, placing it as 15th worldwide and 9th of North American parks.

The studio’s first tour

The year 1914 was when German American immigrant Carl Laemmle purchased the Taylor Ranch in the San Fernando Valley and founded Universal City as a gigantic studio, complete with a zoo and its own police department and mayor as well as the native Americans resident on its property. On the 14th of March 1915 Laemmle inaugurated Universal Studios with a grand opening ceremony that had 10,000 attendees. He later allowed visitors to experience the whole spectacle for a fee that was just 5 cents which included a lunchbox that included chicken. Also, there was the opportunity to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables as the then-rural Universal City was still in the midst of a farm that was still in operation. The original tour was canceled around 1930, due the introduction of sound films , and also due to the fact that the venues were not soundproofed.

Backlot fires

The backlot of Universal Studios Hollywood was damaged by fire nine times in its time. The first incident occurred in 1932, when the embers of an adjacent brush fire swept towards the back lot, which caused four film sets to be destroyed, resulted in more than 100 thousand dollars in damage.Seventeen years after, in 1949, another brush fire resulted in the total destruction of a building as well as damage to two other. In 1957 in 1957, the New York street film studio set was destroyed through an arson fire which caused a half-million dollars of damages. In the year 1967 the damage was twice as extensive. was caused when The Little Europe area and part of Spartacus Square was destroyed. The destruction also affected all of the European, Denver and Laramie street sets. Then, in 1987 the rest in Spartacus Square was destroyed along with street sets as well as other buildings.

Park historiography

In the days following Music Corporation of America (MCA) assumed control of Universal Pictures in 1962, the accountants suggested that a tour of the studio’s commissary would boost profits. On the 15th of July 1964, the current tour was created to include the walks through the dressing room, glimpses at the actual production and later, staged performances. The tour grew into a complete theme park. The tram tour with narration (formerly “Glamor Trams” is still running through the backlot of the studio’s operation however, the staged events including stunt demonstrations, high-tech rides are now a shadow of the motion picture productions that used to draw people at Universal Studios Hollywood.

The Flintstones Show opened, in place of the Star Trek Adventure. In 1991, E.T. Adventure was opened as the first park’s “dark rides,” an industry term for an attraction that makes use of rides to transport guests through an indoor exhibit building. At the same time, a sister Park Universal Studios Florida opened, that also had its own identical E.T. attraction. This Florida attraction was less of a standard theme park that opened the doorway to the Hollywood park’s development. It was 1993 when Back to the Future: The Ride was opened in place of Battle of Galactica. Then, in 1996 Jurassic Park: The Ride was launched. In 1997 the two shows were replaced: The Land Before Time show was replaced by Rocky and Bullwinkle Live; and Totally Nickelodeon replaced the Flintstones Show. One year after it was launched it was announced that the Land Before Time show was replaced by Coke Soak. The year 1999 saw T2-3D: Battle Across Time as well as an Chicken Run Walkthrough opened on the upper level. In addition Beetlejuice’s Rock and Roll Graveyard Revue was shut down.
